Smart Metering - The system solution with EDW3000

Constructed upon the EDW3000 metering system and combined with other systems from different providers for metering and local communication, a complete system has emerged to measure energy consumption remotely in the residential sector.

EDW3000
The EDW3000 metering system features a multitude of functions to control one-off and recurring reading procedures for meters in the field. Switching operations and changes in the configuration are monitored and executed by the EDW3000.

Reading control
Due to the combination of the EDW3000 metering with the local infrastructure of a meter provider, the energy and quality data supplied by a meter can be read. This includes load profiles, register values, time series as well as the register for network quality. The readings can be started both manually and fully automatically with the job-oriented process control in the EDW3000.

Configuration and switching operation
An advanced function of the system is the manual or automatic power limiting and disconnection of the meter(s). The configuration of the grid infrastructure and the tariff structure mapped in the meter, are likewise controlled from the EDW3000.

Data display
Load profile data from the meters are displayed in either tabular, statistical or graphic form whereas the register data are displayed only in tabular form. Depending on the type of data, quality or statistical data apply equivalent forms of display.

Plausibility checks
EDW3000 offers a comprehensive platform to control energy data for integrity and plausibility. These checks can be made for each measuring point either by comparing a default minimum/maximum or the historical values, or by spanning the metering points, e.g. with balancing and calculating losses.

Data calculations
EDW3000 permits extensive calculations to prepare the data for the most diverse uses. Balancing and calculation of losses within a low-voltage cell are accounted for, in order to handle the grid load and transformer utilisation as well as potential non-technical losses. Balancing in sub-areas of the low-voltage grid can also be performed to form results for single customer groups or customer from individual energy suppliers, etc.

Data transfer
Data which have been collected or calculated are usually relayed in accordance with schedules to higher-level systems or partners in the energy market. EDW3000 supports all standard data formats and transmission routes.

Connections
An elementary function of EDW3000 is the connection to business programs. For instance the power can be limited or a meter can be disconnected for a defaulting customer as a result of a reminder from a billing system such as SAP IS-U. EDW3000 provides a separate WEB interface and returns confirmation of operations to the billing system.

Data provision
EDW3000 features a module to provide the data over a WEB server. Energy customers or partners can view online and download the load profile and register data which have been allocated to them, a regular data despatch can be set up. Internal Internet users have also the opportunity to commission intermediate readings or switching operations.

Connect concentrators
EDW3000 enables the connection of data concentrators to the control station with the standard media. They comprise PSTN and GSM connections in addition to GPRS and Internet.

Concentrator-side modems
Depending on the medium used for the communication, suitable modems, preferably from the product family Skalar, are set between the control station and concentrator.

Options
Additional measuring jobs can be integrated in the system if specific Skalar versions are used on the concentrator side. A typical procedure is the integration of an intelligent meter in the transformer, it is applied to combine a reference measuring for the balancing and the voltage quality in compliance with EN 50160. Multiple concentrator based solutions can be combined in one system.
